3D PRINTED BITE SPLINTS - Part 5: Finishing and Polishing

After the direct printing process the surface of the splint must be smoothened and polished.

At first the printed object must be removed from the printing platform with the help of a special scraper. The the so called supports must be removed. This is done with a side cutter. For the following steps we created together with the Meisinger Company a special tool set. We start with a carbide cutter to smooth the surface. We have them in two diameters to reach all areas of the splint. The the pre-polishing will be done with a rubber polisher. After this we are using so called Fuzzies in three different abrasivities. If these steps are finished, we already have a nice and glossy surface wich can be further improved by polishing with brushes and a polishing paste. In all steps we should work with low pressure and rpm. for the very last step we are using a special spray to improve surfaces of prothesis. It again improves the gloss and it also improve the taste of the splint. This is important for the patients first impression.
